In a groundbreaking move toward a digital future, the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) has announced that all airports across the country will transition to a fully cashless system, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward modernization and transparency.
Digital Payments Replace Cash at Airports
The new system will allow passengers to make all payments — from food and beverages to shopping and services — entirely through digital platforms. Collaborating with the State Bank of Pakistan, the PAA plans to install QR code-based payment systems at every major airport, ensuring a quick, safe, and contactless transaction experience.
All airport vendors, service counters, and retail outlets have been directed to shift to digital-only operations, ending the use of physical cash. The move is designed to enhance both operational efficiency and financial security across Pakistan’s aviation network.
First Phase Targets Major Airports
According to officials, the first implementation phase will roll out at Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad international airports. Once successful, the second phase will extend to Faisalabad, Multan, and Sialkot airports, before expanding nationwide.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader Digital Pakistan vision, which aims to integrate technology-driven systems across public and private institutions.
Improving Efficiency, Safety, and Transparency
The PAA emphasized that adopting a cashless model will reduce risks such as theft and human error while speeding up service delivery and eliminating long queues. Additionally, digital record-keeping will simplify audits and improve transparency, enabling better oversight and accountability in airport financial operations.
For passengers, the shift promises a more convenient and hygienic experience, particularly significant in the context of modern health and safety concerns.
A Step Toward Smart Aviation
Officials highlighted that the move reflects Pakistan’s commitment to meeting international standards in aviation management. By embracing digital payments, airports across the country will not only boost customer satisfaction but also project an image of innovation and modernization to global travelers.
The Pakistan Airport Authority reaffirmed its directive for all commercial operators and service providers at airports to adopt the new digital payment infrastructure, reinforcing the country’s stride toward a fully cashless, transparent, and efficient aviation ecosystem.
