Pakistan Takes Off Digitally! Airports Adopt Cashless System for Faster, Safer Payments

In a groundbreaking move toward a digital future, the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) has announced that all airports across the country will transition to a fully cashless system, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward modernization and transparency.

Digital Payments Replace Cash at Airports

The new system will allow passengers to make all payments — from food and beverages to shopping and services — entirely through digital platforms. Collaborating with the State Bank of Pakistan, the PAA plans to install QR code-based payment systems at every major airport, ensuring a quick, safe, and contactless transaction experience.

All airport vendors, service counters, and retail outlets have been directed to shift to digital-only operations, ending the use of physical cash. The move is designed to enhance both operational efficiency and financial security across Pakistan’s aviation network.

First Phase Targets Major Airports

According to officials, the first implementation phase will roll out at Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad international airports. Once successful, the second phase will extend to Faisalabad, Multan, and Sialkot airports, before expanding nationwide.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader Digital Pakistan vision, which aims to integrate technology-driven systems across public and private institutions.
