Punjab Launches ‘Surrender of Illegal Arms Act 2025’: 15-Day Amnesty Announced for Unlicensed Weapons

The Punjab government has rolled out the Punjab Surrender of Illegal Arms Act 2025, granting citizens a 15-day amnesty to voluntarily hand over unlicensed firearms without facing legal consequences.

Crackdown After Amnesty Period

Officials have warned that once the grace period expires, strict action will follow. Individuals caught possessing illegal weapons will face prison sentences of 4 to 14 years and fines between Rs1 million and Rs3 million. The move is part of the government’s broader initiative to curb gun culture and strengthen law and order across the province.

Law Introduced Under CM Maryam Nawaz’s Vision

The new legislation was announced by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar during a press conference at the Central Police Office. The initiative aligns with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s commitment to ensuring peace and safety in Punjab.
Senior officials, including Special Secretary Home Fazalur Rehman and Additional IGP Counter Crime Department (CCD) Sohail Zafar Chattha, were also present at the briefi
ng.

‘No One Will Be Spared,’ Warns IGP

IGP Dr. Anwar emphasized that the law applies to everyone equally.

“Every citizen must surrender illegal arms within 15 days. After that, strict action will be taken without any discrimination. Those keeping weapons for personal disputes or show of power will not be spared,” he stated.

Audit of Licensed Firearms Planned

In addition to the amnesty drive, the Punjab Police will reverify and audit over one million licensed firearms to ensure transparency and proper documentation.
Dr. Anwar also revealed that a province-wide inspection campaign will be launched soon to tackle the ‘dalaa culture’—the public exhibition and misuse of weapons.

A Step Toward a Safer Punjab

The Punjab Surrender of Illegal Arms Act 2025 reflects the government’s strong stance against illegal weapon possession. With this decisive step, the province aims to promote peace, reduce gun-related crimes, and restore citizens’ confidence in law enforcement.
