Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday inaugurated the Shaheen Chowk Underpass project in Islamabad, emphasizing that timely completion of infrastructure initiatives will greatly benefit citizens and enhance Pakistan’s global image.
During the foundation-laying ceremony, attended by federal ministers, parliamentarians, local dignitaries, and senior officials from the Interior Ministry and Capital Development Authority (CDA), the prime minister highlighted that the project is part of the government’s broader plan to promote rapid urban development in the federal capital.
Shehbaz Sharif noted that the underpass will reduce traffic congestion, improve travel efficiency, and save both time and fuel for commuters. He commended the Ministry of Interior and CDA for their efforts in accelerating public welfare projects and said the government remains committed to completing initiatives that serve the national interest and uplift the quality of life for citizens.
The prime minister added that the ongoing infrastructure and beautification projects in Islamabad aim to present the capital as a modern, vibrant, and well-planned city, particularly as the city prepares to host the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.
“With these fast-track projects, we are not only ensuring public convenience but also reflecting Pakistan’s progress and planning excellence before the world,” he said.
Before laying the foundation stone, PM Shehbaz was given a detailed briefing on the project’s scope and expected impact on city traffic flow.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, while addressing the ceremony, said that the Shaheen Chowk Underpass will help ease traffic pressure on Margalla Road. He also shared that work on 11th Avenue is already underway, with new projects such as the Kashmir Chowk Underpass soon to begin.
Naqvi further stated that Islamabad’s development is being aligned with international urban standards, and within the next year, the city will emerge as one of the most advanced and beautiful capitals in the region.]
