The Sindh government has launched a strict crackdown to prevent misuse of its Pink Scooter Project, warning that scooters found being used by male family members will be confiscated.
According to Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, Managing Director of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority, the initiative was launched exclusively for women — particularly female students and working professionals — to help them travel safely and independently. She said the project aims to empower women by reducing their reliance on others for daily commuting.
Bhutto emphasized that all scooters must carry official registration number plates and that every rider must possess a valid motorcycle licence. Violations of these requirements, including allowing men to use the scooters, will result in immediate confiscation. She also reminded users that wearing helmets is mandatory for their safety.
So far, the Sindh government has distributed 200 pink electric scooters to women in Karachi and nearby districts through a transparent selection process. Each recipient completed a week-long training session before receiving her vehicle.
Authorities from the police, traffic police, and excise department have been directed to conduct regular inspections to ensure the scooters are being used properly. Bhutto reiterated that only women are permitted to operate them, stating that “if men begin riding these scooters, the core mission of women’s empowerment will be defeated.”
The government is now preparing to expand the project with an additional 725 scooters, which will soon be distributed to eligible women in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, and Larkana.
Kanwal assured that strict enforcement measures will remain in place to protect the integrity of the program. “The Pink Scooter Project symbolizes Sindh’s commitment to empowering women with freedom, safety, and confidence on the roads,” she said.
