Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has officially relaunched its flight operations to the United Kingdom, ending a pause of over five years and marking a significant milestone in the airline’s history.
The first flight from Islamabad to Manchester took off on Saturday, symbolizing PIA’s triumphant return to UK airspace following the removal of a long-standing ban. To celebrate the occasion, a special ceremony was held at Islamabad International Airport, attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, senior aviation officials, and the airline’s management team.
During his address, Khawaja Asif acknowledged the heavy financial losses Pakistan suffered during the suspension but emphasized that PIA’s operational safety and service standards have been fully restored. He also commended Jane Marriott for her vital support in facilitating the lifting of the ban, highlighting the growing cooperation between Pakistan and the United Kingdom in the aviation sector.
The UK had suspended PIA operations in July 2020 due to concerns over pilot license verifications. After five years and three months, the national carrier has finally secured clearance to resume operations in British airspace — a move celebrated by both nations.
In its initial phase, PIA will operate two weekly flights between Islamabad and Manchester, scheduled every Tuesday and Saturday, using Boeing 777 aircraft. The inaugural flight, carrying 273 passengers, departed at noon with great enthusiasm from travelers and aviation staff alike.
Looking ahead, PIA plans to expand its UK network by launching direct flights to London in the next phase. To commemorate the airline’s return, Islamabad Airport showcased a large portrait of Manchester, symbolizing the renewed bridge of air connectivity and friendship between Pakistan and the UK.
