Pakistan Welcomes First US Crude Oil Shipment Under Landmark Trade Deal
MT Pegasus delivers one million barrels of WTI crude, marking new chapter in Pak–US energy cooperation
In a historic milestone for Pakistan’s energy sector, the country has received its first-ever shipment of crude oil from the United States under a newly signed trade agreement between Islamabad and Washington.
The massive vessel MT Pegasus, the largest American oil tanker to dock at a Pakistani port, arrived at Cnergyico’s Single Point Mooring (SPM) terminal in Hub, Balochistan, carrying one million barrels of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude. The tanker began its journey from Houston, Texas, on September 14 and completed the voyage after crossing the Atlantic and Arabian seas.
According to Cnergyico, the private energy company managing the import, this marks the first-ever purchase of WTI crude by Pakistan. Company officials confirmed that a second shipment of American crude is expected by mid-November, with a third consignment planned for 2026.
Strengthening Pak–US Energy Ties
Industry experts see this development as a turning point in Pakistan–US trade relations, highlighting Islamabad’s efforts to diversify energy sources and reduce dependency on traditional suppliers. The agreement is also viewed as a step towards enhancing energy security and market competitiveness amid shifting global oil dynamics.
A spokesperson for Cnergyico said the company remains committed to bolstering Pakistan’s energy resilience and supporting long-term cooperation between the two nations. The spokesperson added that the deal aligns with Pakistan’s broader goal of expanding its crude sourcing portfolio to ensure stability and sustainability in energy supplies.
A Strategic Shift in Energy Policy
The arrival of MT Pegasus signifies Pakistan’s strategic move to explore new partnerships and reduce vulnerabilities in its oil supply chain. By engaging with the United States for WTI imports, Pakistan aims to tap into high-quality crude options that could improve refinery output and lower production costs.
This milestone not only strengthens economic ties between the two countries but also demonstrates Pakistan’s growing integration into global energy trade networks.
