Karachi’s newly introduced faceless e-challan system has made a powerful debut, issuing 2,662 traffic fines worth over Rs12.5 million within just six hours of going live, according to the latest data shared by the Karachi Traffic Police.
The advanced digital platform — officially named the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) — is designed to overhaul Karachi’s traffic enforcement by replacing manual ticketing with a fully automated, AI-driven monitoring network.
Thousands Penalized in First Few Hours
Within hours of its launch, TRACS detected 419 cases of overspeeding, 1,535 for seat belt violations, 166 for red-light jumping, and 507 for riding without helmets.
Additional penalties included four tickets for lane violations, three for stop-line breaches, seven for tinted windows, and 32 for mobile phone use while driving. The report also noted fines for illegal parking and wrong-way driving, signaling an extensive crackdown on reckless behavior across the city.
A Major Step Toward Digital Governance
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah inaugurated the system at the Central Police Office, calling it a milestone in the province’s journey toward digital governance and transparency.
He explained that TRACS uses AI-enabled CCTV cameras capable of automatically identifying traffic violations like speeding, red-light offenses, and helmet non-compliance — ensuring accuracy, fairness, and the elimination of human bias in law enforcement.
Ease for Citizens Through TRACS App and Sahulat Centres
To make the process citizen-friendly, TRACS Sahulat Centres have been set up at major traffic offices and police stations. Here, motorists can verify violations, pay fines, or contest tickets.
Additionally, the TRACS mobile app allows users to track their challans and make payments online, securely linked to Excise, Taxation, NADRA e-Sahulat, and driving license databases for seamless integration.
Expansion Plans and Future Vision
At present, 200 smart cameras are active across Karachi, with an ambitious plan to expand coverage to 12,000 cameras citywide — eventually extending across Sindh province.
The system is also connected to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) to ensure transparent oversight and swift grievance handling.
With the launch of TRACS, Karachi has entered a new era of digital traffic management, reinforcing the government’s dedication to road safety, transparency, and public convenience.
