ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction of Rs7.60 per unit in K-Electric’s average base tariff, bringing it down from Rs39.97 to Rs32.37 per unit.
The revised rates were announced on Tuesday following K-Electric’s petition seeking adjustments across its generation, transmission, and supply segments. NEPRA confirmed that the new tariff will be applicable across all four operational areas — generation, transmission, distribution, and supply.
Key Details of the Tariff Decision
NEPRA officials clarified that the earlier decision regarding the “Right of Claims” remains in effect, meaning consumers will still bear an additional financial impact of Rs50 billion under this category.
The authority stated that the new tariff structure aims to align costs more accurately with current energy and operational factors, providing a balanced approach between affordability and sustainability for Karachi’s electricity consumers.
K-Electric’s Response
In a brief statement, a K-Electric spokesperson said the company is currently reviewing NEPRA’s detailed determination and will assess all legal and regulatory options available in response to the decision.
The adjustment in the base tariff is expected to influence future billing cycles once the new rates are officially notified by the government.
