YouTube is rolling out an artificial intelligence–powered feature designed to make low-resolution videos appear sharper and clearer. The platform’s new AI upscaling system, titled “Super Resolution,” will automatically enhance standard-definition (SD) videos to high-definition (HD) quality — and eventually even to 4K.

AI Upscaling to Improve Older Videos

In the early days of YouTube, most videos were uploaded in 240p or 480p quality. While modern creators now shoot primarily in 1080p or higher, a massive archive of older videos remains in low resolution. YouTube’s latest innovation aims to change that by using advanced AI algorithms to upscale older or lower-quality clips, giving viewers a crisp and modern visual experience.

Videos enhanced through this feature will carry the “Super Resolution” label, making it clear that AI has been used to improve the visual quality. Creators and viewers will still have the choice to opt out if they prefer watching or uploading content in its original resolution.

YouTube has increased the thumbnail upload limit from 2MB to 50MB, allowing higher-quality images that can make videos stand out more effectively.
