In a landmark step to boost regional connectivity and development, Pakistan has announced plans to build a new international airport in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The project aims to provide world-class air travel facilities to millions of residents and overseas Pakistanis linked to the region.

Feasibility Studies and Site Selection Underway

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) confirmed that technical feasibility work for the upcoming airport has officially started. The process includes selecting a suitable location and carrying out comprehensive engineering and environmental assessments.

“The Pakistan Airports Authority has initiated the technical feasibility process, including site identification and evaluation,” the spokesperson stated. “Initial studies and assessments are expected to be completed by December 2025.”

Once the feasibility and design approvals are finalized, officials said, the government will announce the groundbreaking ceremony, paving the way for construction to begin within the current fiscal year.

A Major Boost for AJK’s Connectivity and Economy

The proposed Mirpur International Airport is set to become one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Azad Kashmir’s history. The facility will serve as a direct gateway for overseas Pakistanis, particularly those living in the United Kingdom and the Middle East who frequently travel to Mirpur and adjoining districts.

Currently, residents of AJK rely on Islamabad and other distant airports for international travel. The new airport will greatly reduce travel time, improve convenience, and support both domestic and international flight operations.

Authorities believe the project will not only enhance mobility but also act as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and tourism in the region. Improved air connectivity is expected to attract investment opportunities, support local businesses, and strengthen trade links with other parts of Pakistan.

Completion Timeline and Government Commitment

The PAA has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all technical, environmental, and logistical processes are completed efficiently and on schedule.

“The Authority has initiated groundwork and aims to finalize all studies and approvals by the end of 2025,” the spokesperson added.

Once completed, the Mirpur International Airport will stand as a symbol of progress and modernization for Azad Jammu and Kashmir—fulfilling a long-awaited demand of the local population and overseas communities.
