China has unveiled the world’s largest all-electric river cargo ship, marking a new milestone in its mission to promote sustainable and intelligent maritime transport.
The vessel, named Gezhouba, is the first all-electric cargo ship with a deadweight capacity of 10,000 tonnes, setting a benchmark for eco-friendly innovation in the global shipping industry. Stretching almost 130 meters in length, Gezhouba is capable of carrying over 13,000 tonnes of cargo across China’s inland waterways.
What sets this ship apart is its advanced energy system, powered by 12 high-capacity lithium battery units with a combined output of 24,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh). This powerful setup enables the vessel to operate with zero emissions while maintaining efficiency comparable to traditional diesel-powered ships.
According to reports, Gezhouba will help save approximately 617 tonnes of fuel annually, cutting down over 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The project is part of China’s broader strategy to lead the global shift toward clean energy and green logistics, reflecting its growing investment in environmental innovation and maritime technology.
With Gezhouba now operational, China continues to chart the course toward a carbon-neutral future in shipping, setting an example for sustainable industrial development worldwide.
